Welcome to the 12th annual celebration of the very best of Halifax eating and drinking. All the winners are decided by the votes of Coast readers, the wise tastemakers who happen to be the very best readers in the world.

The rules are simple: Name your favourite in at least 10 of the following categories, and you’re a BOF voter. All BOF voters are entered in our prize draw, from which 5 lucky voters will be picked at random to win a sweet night-out prize, from concert tickets to a sleepover at the Delta.

To enter, you must be a registered member of The Coast's website (so if you haven’t already, you might want to sign up now). We promise not to share you information with anyone outside The Coast. We will add your email address to our newsletter mailing list, but you can easily unsubscribe if you’re not digging it.

Like any election, we encourage the candidates (restaurants, bars, servers and such) to lobby their fans for votes, but only one vote per person is allowed. (We have ways to thwart cheaters, and improper votes will be disqualified.) If you add insightful reasons or clever comments or contribute to the forum section at the end of the survey, we may (anonymously) quote you. And if you have any trouble voting, please let us know at boftech@thecoast.ca.

Keep your choices local—that is, stick to restaurants, bars, shops, etc. that are owned and operated here in Halifax. If it's a chain you're voting for, be sure to specify the location so we know who exactly you're talking about. For example, Just Us! has coffeehouses on both Spring Garden Road and Barrington Street, and Cora has five shops around the city.

Voting is open all day from Wednesday, March 6 through Wednesday, April 10, inclusive. We've made changes in some categories to help voters, which you can read more about here. Results from the voting will be announced in The Coast Thursday, May 23.
