Welcome to the 19th annual celebration of who, what and where is the Best of Halifax. All the winners are decided by votes of Coast readers, the most knowledgable readers in all of the universe. That’s you!
The rules are simple: Name your favourite in at least 10 of the following categories—or in all of them if you’re real keen—and you're entered in a random draw for one of our incredible (like, brag-about-it-to-your-peers-incredible) prizes. Plus you get all the thrills of participatory democracy from the cozy confines of your web browser. Enough said.
To enter the Best of Halifax Readers’ Choice City Awards, you must be a registered member of The Coast's website (you can sign up now if you haven't before). We pinky swear not to share your information with anyone outside of The Coast. We will add your email address to our newsletter mailing list, but if it’s not your cup of tea you can unsubscribe easily.
The Best of Halifax is like any election, and we encourage prospective candidates—shops, services, drag queens and such—to lobby their fans for votes, but only one vote per person is allowed. (We have ways to thwart sneaky cheaters, and trust us, improper votes will be tossed.) If you add insightful reasons or clever comments to explain your answers, we might just (anonymously) quote you, so definitely share your opinions. And if you have any trouble voting, please let us know at bohtech@thecoast.ca.
Keep your choices local, which is to say shops, organizations, people, etc. located here in Halifax. If it's a chain business you're voting for, with more than one outlet in the city, be sure to specify the location so we know who exactly deserves the glory. For example, Foreign Affair has locations on both Spring Garden Road and Barrington Street, Cucina Moderna has outlets in downtown, Dartmouth and Bedford, and there are Gap stores in Halifax Shopping Centre, Bayers Lake and Mic Mac Mall.
Voting is open from Thursday, August 22 through Sunday, September 22, inclusive. Results will be announced in The Coast Thursday, November 7. The big awards celebration will be that night too, so start polishing your party hat.
If you're wondering where all the food and music questions are, take a gander at our separate Best of Halifax Food and Best of Halifax Music awards, which were both voted on earlier in the year. And if you’d like find out more about how the Best of Halifax works, check out the BOH FAQ here.
Enjoy sharing the love via our poll and we thank you for taking part.
